As many suckler herds start to turn out cows and calves for the summer, it’s important to be aware of the risk of Hypomagnesaemia, better known as grass staggers.

Traditionally, cases of grass staggers occur following spring turn out and often during wet weather when dietary intakes of grass drop for short periods. Staggers is also seen in the autumn months when we get a late rapid growth of grass.

Despite this apparent seasonality, the risk is ever present. Staggers should be considered throughout the grazing season and preventative measures put in place in order to manage high risk times or to ensure that cows are receiving adequate magnesium in order to prevent problems from arising.

Magnesium is required by the central nervous system for its normal function, so deficiency causes symptoms that are neurological. Cows are almost entirely dependent on a continual daily intake of magnesium as they cannot store the required amounts in their system.

Davidsons Suckler Cow Rolls are specially designed to meet the magnesium demands at critical times. By feeding 3lb of rolls per head per day this ensures cows get the required 2oz (60g) of magnesium to combat against grass staggers.
