Stephen Taylor

Dairy Tech Consultant

Tell us a bit about you?

I stay in Stirling and cover the Central and Ayrshire belt. I have been a part of the Dairy Tech team at Davidsons just shy 3 years but have been in dairy industry for over 8 years, as I was an engineer for Dairy Flow. I have been involved in farming from a very young age and it’s become a massive part of my life.

What’s your role, and what do you do day-to-day?

My role within the company is a Dairy Tech Consultant. I also run the transition management programme (TMS). Every day can be different with a new challenge, that’s why I love my job. From looking at diets, costings, formulations or doing TMS, I cover a wide range of roles. I will do anything the customer requires to help them achieve the goals of where they want to be.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is when a customer phones with an issue and asks for my advice to resolve it. There is no better feeling of knowing you helped resolve or overcome a problem.

What makes you stand out from other consultants?

The experience from working with Dairyflow and understanding the software side of dairying is a massive advantage as I am comfortable on working with all types of software. Having a passion and drive for livestock, is a huge benefit as across Dairy Tech, the team has an abundance of experience which is vital.

What do you do on farm to make you different to others?

I am a very hands on person when it comes to being on farm. I will always offer to walk through and look at the cows we are talking about first, assessing cow behaviour, body condition, general herd health and fertility. I like to look at the bigger picture, taking into account shed facilitates, feed space and water accessibility to see where we can make small changes to maximise overall production.

What can you do on farm to benefit your customers?

On-farm, I always make it a priority to walk the milkers and dry cows to get a clear picture of overall cow health, condition, and dung quality. I’m more than happy to work with whatever the customer needs — whether that’s sampling forages, reviewing diets and feed formulations, analysing milking data, checking feed tables, or assessing fertility performance. I’m also experienced in calibrating feeders and evaluating cow comfort, including shed facilities, to identify any areas for improvement. Ultimately, I’m here to support the customer in whatever way is required.

What inspired you to purse this career?

I have always loved farming from such a young age. There are many doors that can be opened within the industry. By having the opportunity to join the Davidsons Dairy Tech this has allowed me to use my background knowledge to further develop and advance the team.

What are your hobbies outside work?

I help the Falleninch herd with their Charolais cattle. Whether that’s breaking the show team, getting them ready for shows or just day to day jobs, I am happy to get hands on with anything. I also play rugby for Strathendrick RFC, enjoy playing golf and of-course socialising.
